The Art Educator’s of New Jersey (AENJ) Advisory Council and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is proud to announce the 2012 Spring Symposium, The Book That Can’t Be Nooked. This year’s symposium will explore Book Arts as its theme and will consist of hands-on workshops. Each participant will engage in their own meaningful book art-making practices, gain knowledge to explore book arts in the K-12 art classrooms and will leave with their own book!
Four different book making workshops will be offered, participants can sign up for one workshop only. Each workshop is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Read the descriptions below for a preview of what's to come!
1) Japanese Stab Binding with Elizabeth Mackie

An introduction to this traditional form of bookbinding including a short discussion on the historical and contemporary uses of the forms, hands on exercises to learn stitching techniques and develop patterns for future projects and the production of a book using traditional Japanese papers. Three stitching patterns will be introduced. One pattern will be selected for the final book. Materials will be provided.
2) Book In A Box and Tag Accordion Book with Linda Devlin

This workshop will focus on creating two book structures. The first, A Book in a Box is a simple folded paper book which fits perfectly into a hand made box. The second A Tag Accordion Book gives you multiple pockets with removable pages. Both books are simple to construct and can easily be made with materials you have in your classroom. But this workshop is not just about building the book. Itís also about content ideas and using materials. Weíll explore multiple techniques, contemporary and traditional to embellish the surface of the paper. Learn to create customized surfaces and colors for the pages of your books. These books are simple enough for upper elementary but can be geared up for your high school students. Participants are invited to bring a small bag of found objects to add to their books like beads, flat watch parts, colored pieces of strings or fabric, candy wrappers, movie tickets, personal photos etc.
3) Coptic Book with Karen Kiick
Learn how to create a hard-cover Coptic Book! This structure is an advanced, sewn book with an exposed spine that shows off its beautiful stitch. This workshop will teach you how to create a Coptic Book and at the end of the class you will walk away with your own blank journal! The session will also address a few decorative paper technique and how to teach and approach this structure with students by sharing sketchbook prompt ideas, assessment strategies, and other lesson plan builders.
4) Tunnel Book with Harry Bower

One of the beginning functions of the "Tunnel Book" concept was used by the Medical World. Doctors could "view" through a key-hole and look at the layers or pages of the human body and observe the relationships and placements. Book Artists have embraced this technique of overlapping of pages and viewing through an opening. Participants will create a "Tunnel Book" that will work with foreground, middleground and background images with an emphasis on a specific artistic genre. All materials, supplies and tools will be available. Participants may bring additional images, postcards, greeting cards, wrapping papers, stamps and ink pads. At the conclusion of the workshop each artist will complete a multipage book.
