ART EDUCATORS OF NEW JERSEY ANNUAL FALL CONFERENCE

Join us Wednesday evening, October 12th – Friday, October 14th at the beautiful Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, NJ.

THEME

Art Educators of New Jersey annual Fall conference will be held IN-PERSON at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch, New Jersey. This year’s conference theme, TOGETHER IN ART, highlights diversity in visual arts and the importance of harnessing our individual experiences and those of our students to fuel creativity, engagement, the artistic learning process and academic success.

Keynote addresses and smaller hands-on workshops will be delivered by: April Walker, Dahlia Elsayed and Marc Handelman. Several Best Practice Lectures, Hands-On Workshops, Pre-Service Student Roundtables and Informational Sessions led by AENJ members and other educational leaders will be held on varied topics such as: the new NJSLS; advocating for your program; climate and culture; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; diversity, equity, and inclusion; SEL, wellness, and mental health; supporting all learners and much more.

3 FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERS

DAHLIA ELSAYED- Thursday, October 13

Dahlia Elsayed is an artist and writer who makes text and image based work that synthesizes an internal and external experience of place, connecting the ephemeral to the concrete. She writes short fictions for created landscapes that take the form of narrative paintings, print and installation. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions throughout the United States and internationally, including the 12th Cairo Biennale, Robert Miller Gallery, BravinLee Programs, The New Jersey State Museum and Aljira Center for Contemporary Art. Her work is in the public collections of the Newark Museum, the Zimmerli Museum, Johnson & Johnson Corporation, the US Department of State, amongst others. Dahlia has received awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Edward Albee Foundation, Visual Studies Workshop, the MacDowell Colony, Women’s Studio Workshop, Headlands Center for the Arts, and the NJ State Council on the Arts. She received her MFA from Columbia University, and lives and works in New Jersey. Ms. Elsayed is Professor of Humanities at CUNY LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, NY.

APRIL WALKER- Friday, October 14

NECESSARY REBEL

April Walker is a fashion designer, culture shifter, and entrepreneur whose work has been featured in Forbes, In Style, Essence, The New York Times, BET, WWD, The Huffington Post, Drink Champs, Yahoo, Vogue, CFDA, American Express, Ford and more. April is featured in Netflix’s “The Remix” and CNN’s “Fresh Dressed”. As a Brooklyn native, she followed her creative intuition to become an entrepreneur and pioneer urban fashion by setting the stage for a revolution in fashion industry norms, gender politics and creative control. April shaped the direction that culture and style would take in the future, and created one of the most relevant and influential brand histories to date. As homegrown fashion like Walker Wear incubated in urban communities and grew into a mainstream global force, April’s brand paved the way for entrepreneurs by helping to create a multi-billion dollar industry called streetwear. She’s the first woman with a men’s urban fashion brand, and Walker Wear was also one of the first to kick in distribution doors, command millions in sales, and dress icons such as Tupac, BIG and Aaliyah.

April is also an author of “Walkergems Get Your A$% Off The Couch”, serves as an adjunct professor at NYU/TISCH, contributes to Parson’s “Streetwear Essentials” course, and is a consultant at Brooklyn Academy of Global Finance. She is the recipient of several fashion awards and her work has been internationally showcased at Soho House Berlin, Centraal Museum in Utrecht, and the Kunsthal in Rotterdam.

MARC HANDELMAN (He/Him/His)- Friday, October 14

Marc Handelman is a visual artist and teacher. Handelman’s paintings and other artworks explore the afterlives of the genre of landscape in contemporary political life. From the imperial rhetoric of American Landscape that resurfaces incorporate advertising, political branding, and white nationalist ideology, to the essentialization of the domain we call nature, Handelman’s work explores and reimagines the entanglement of aesthetics in the construction of knowledge where Landscape conditions the legitimization of colonial and environmental violence. Handelman received his BFA in Painting from RISD and an MFA from Columbia University. He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States as well as internationally in such venues as PS1 MoMA, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Artists Space, The Orlando Museum of Art, The Royal Academy of Art in London, The Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, The Portland Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rubin Museum, The Matsumoto City Museum of Art, and the Storefront for Art and Architecture, among others. Handelman is an Associate Professor at The Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, where he currently serves as Chair of the Department of Art & Design. He is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in New York. Handelman lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Sessions Descriptions

Ticketed Hands-On Workshops : Attend a ticketed workshop for an additional cost.

Hands-On Workshops (90 Minutes) are available to conference attendees at an extra cost. These are interactive sessions provide time for direct instruction from the presenter and ample time for attendees to engage in the art making process, so they can take a sample of what has been taught to their classroom.

Best Practices, Student Roundtables, Informational Sessions- Thursday & Friday: Attend “Best Practices” FREE with admission to the conference.

Best Practice Lectures (50 Minutes) are free to all attendees. They are a great opportunity to present content area information, tips and tricks, new lessons/activities and highlights of helpful information for other educators and artists inside the classroom. Held in a traditional lecture style, the presenter leads the talk as attendees take in the shared information. Time for questions and answers typically occur at the end. Bring your own device, and projector to show images and videos on our large screens.

Student Roundtables (50 Minutes) are free presentations by pre-service/college students sharing lessons and activities in a small group setting. These sessions are quick and allow for activities, dialogue and Q&A among presenters and attendees.

Informational Sessions are free presentations providing a broad range of focused information on a specific topic ranging from career readiness to cutting edge programs or technology. This is a traditional lecture style session that doesn’t quite fit the description of a Best Practice Lecture but still offers our attendees useful information.

Hotel Room Special pricing will only be available until 09-12-22 (“Reservation Hold Date”). Pricing: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Nights: Doubles, Singles and Suites will cost $194.00 a room per night for our guests.
